The Holy Monastery of Mikrokastro has bid farewell to nun Erini

The Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God at Mikrokastro has bid its farewell to nun Erini who reposed to our true, heavenly realm, the Heavenly Jerusalem; death for Christians is none other than dormition and transposition to the true life.

The Mtropolitan of Sisaniou and Siatistis, Paul, along with the Metropolitans of Kastoria and Florinis, Serapheim and Theokleitos and the Bishop of Thermon, Demitirus officiated at the funeral, while numerous priests, monks and nuns poured in from all over Greece.

Among those present were the Regional officer of Western Macedonia, the mayor of Viou, the former nomarch of Kozanis and several other local officials and laity from various regions.

Metropolitan Paul referred to blessed Erini in admiration using inspiring and consoling words.

The Abbess of the Monastery, Theologia, also mentioned some instances from her life.

‘Erini was known as Despina Stathaki and was born to a devout family with many siblings. She was taught the word of God by her parents, Emmanuel and Erini and the abbess of the monastery. While still at school she entrusted her Christian upbringing to Abbess Theologia whom she loved very much. She studied Theology at the Theological Institute of St Sergios in Paris under the guidance of her spiritual father Polykarpos Mantzaroglou. Even though she did not complete her studies, she continued to show immense interest in theological issues, exhibiting her sensitive ecclesiastical conscience.

At the monastery she showed patience and strict adherence to the ecclesiastical regime, at the same time working hard as the treasurer and administrator of the coffers of the coenobium. She was very compassionate and became the clandestine protector of the poor and the orphans, secretly helping underprivileged students.

She became distinguished for her eagerness to unite those at odds and was very quick to ask for forgiveness even from younger nuns.

Her moment of truth came while she was on duty. Even though she was in pain she went to wake up the nuns for the morning liturgy by hitting the talanton. But she never made it. Instead she met with the archangels who are particularly venerated by the Church on Mondays.

Erini is now ascending the path towards the Kingdom of heaven as a much endowed bride, accompanied by her earthly struggles in fasting, prayers and her ample deeds of love and repentance’.

At the end of the funeral service a simple dinner was offered to the guests.

Let our Creator, the Holy Triune Lord, rest her soul in the realm of the living and the dens of the righteous.
